Upside-Down House - Built for views, designed for living

The big idea

The most memorable homes often begin with a single bold idea. For this architect-designed residence by Drew Architects, the idea was deceptively simple: if the view is above you, why not build life around it? The result is not only a striking contemporary home, but a distinctive architectural home for sale in Kempton Park shaped around light, outlook and an unusually thoughtful way of living.

When the owners first explored their site within Serengeti Estates, the defining moment came with an unexpected change in viewpoint. At the architect’s suggestion, they climbed onto the roof of a car – and the landscape revealed itself in full: sweeping fairway views, immense skies and a striking sense of openness. That extraordinary shift in perspective sparked the home’s central concept.

The response was to invert the conventional family home entirely. Rather than placing daily living at ground level, the house lifts its social heart upwards. The result is a contemporary home shaped around outlook, light and connection – one that feels quietly dramatic yet deeply liveable.

Organic industrial

From the road, the house reads as a singular, sculptural form – private, slightly enigmatic, softened by curves and material warmth. The owners originally imagined a modern farmhouse, but the design evolved into something they describe as “organic industrial”: steel, concrete and bold architectural gestures balanced by a surprisingly warm, tactile atmosphere.

Inside, the experience unfolds gradually. A suspended staircase – hanging improbably from steel rods above – draws the eye immediately towards garden, golf course and sky. Upstairs, the home opens into a generous sequence of living spaces designed for cooking, gathering and long, unhurried evenings shared with family and friends.

The heart

This is, emphatically, a kitchen-centred house. “We like cooking, we love entertaining,” says the owner. “A six-metre countertop, I think, is too short!”

The kitchen sits physically and emotionally at the centre of the upper level. From here, spaces flow effortlessly into a relaxed TV lounge, an indoor braai and entertainment room, and a dedicated wine room – all arranged against uninterrupted fairway views. Vast sliding glass panels disappear into cavities, allowing the entire frontage of the house to open completely in summer, dissolving the distinction between indoors and out.

The effect is expansive without feeling showy. Every decision appears to have been considered not simply for appearance, but for how the house would actually be lived in.

Winter comfort

That practicality extends to comfort. Conscious of the cold Highveld winter climate, the owners invested heavily in thermal performance. Energy specialists modelled the home. Overhangs regulate seasonal sun. Polished aggregate flooring acts as thermal mass, storing warmth through winter days. Double glazing helps retain heat. Compartmentalised zones allow sections of the house to be closed off and heated independently. The result? “We walk barefoot in winter,” the owner says.

Vertical drama

The sumptuous main bedroom suite is privately positioned on the upper level to make the most of the spectacular views. Below, the private lower level reveals another dimension of the home. Guest accommodation, children’s suites, studies, a home cinema, gym and quieter retreat spaces unfold along a long passageway before it opens dramatically into one of the home’s most distinctive features: the double-volume “man cave”.

Part garage (it comfortably accommodates four cars), part gallery, part sound sanctuary, it reflects the owner’s passion for cars, music and beautifully engineered spaces. Industrial in character yet unexpectedly atmospheric, it glows like a lantern after dark behind slatted screens. A welded spiral staircase rises through the volume, while views from the wine room above allow prized vehicles to become part of the architectural theatre.

“It gives so much personality to the house,” says the owner. “This is not just your run-of-the-mill home for mom, pop and two kids.”

Open air

Outside, the house balances openness with unusual privacy for the estate. A gated, enclosed front court shields daily life from view, while the rear garden spills towards the golf course. A compact pool, concealed beneath a rolling platform when not in use, sits alongside a boma area designed for summer evenings and easy entertaining. Broad stairs connect upper-level living with the garden below, reinforcing the home’s strong inside-outside rhythm.
